PRESS RELEASE
Danville, Virginia, 1/30/11

COBRAS STRIKE BACK AT TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS WINTER CLASSIC

The most highly decorated collegiate equestrian team of the past decade has been in a bit of a slump.  Virginia Intermont has won more IHSA Nationals
than anyone in the 21st century, and they’ve displayed the Tournament of Champions Series Champion Trophy on campus seven times during that period,
but they haven’t won a Tournament of Champions show since 2008.  The Cobras struck back at the Tournament of Champions Winter Classic horse
show, January 29 in Chatham, Virginia.  Intermont was the picture of consistency, with five second places and a third, their only winner being Andrea
MacQueen in the intermediate flat class.
Their point total of 36 made them the easy winner, and was enough to propel them into the lead for 2010-2011 Series Champion Team as well.

The field of teams for this Winter Classic was probably one of the most competitive ever, demonstrated with twelve different teams on the
scoreboard in the first two classes.    Virginia Tech – last year’s
Series Champ – took the first blue ribbon of the day, then West Virginia’s Miranda Cain won the first section of Open Fences.  By the time Annelise Wilhite
of South Carolina won Class 4, the section B of Open Fences, nearly every team was on the scoreboard.

Delaware Valley was the other consistent team, with two blue ribbons and four reds, but two zeros and a green ribbon left a gap too large to overcome.
Interestingly, Del Val’s Ciara Menkens went on to be the winner of the Tournament of Champions Medal, despite managing only a single point in two open
team classes.  Late in the day, the Aggies got consecutive blue ribbons from Chelsea Koerper in Novice Fences, then Melissa Milligan in Walk Trot to
streak to the top of the pack after lingering back in the pack most of the day.  Nineteen points in their final three classes was enough to launch Del Val to
Reserve Champion for the show with 30 points, an effort strong enough to earn them Series Reserve Champion honors as well.  The Aggies had
previously been the big winners at the Holiday Tournament of Champions in December.

Saint Andrews started strong again, as they had in December when they led the Holiday Tournament all day before fading to 2nd Place.  By midday, the
Knights looked like they were able to stay with Intermont, but a slow finish combined with strong finishes by Intermont and Del Val sent St Andrews to 3rd
Place.

Mount Holyoke finished strong with 11 points in the final two classes, but it was too little too late to catch the leaders.  They claimed 5th Place with a Tie
Breaker over another perennially strong finisher, Virginia Tech.  Lynchburg rounded out the field of underachievers, finishing back in the pack with an
uncharacteristically mediocre performance.  Tech and Lynchburg had come into the weekend in 1st and 3rd Place for the Series Championship.  Nearly
every team in the show is 1st Place in their regions, so it surely proved a frustrating day for many.

The big surprise again was West Virginia, whose 25 points was enough to earn 4th Place for the Mountaineers, paced by Cain’s early open fences win
and Kait Scott’s blue ribbon late in the day in novice fences.  The Mountaineers had previously surprised us with a 7th Place finish at the Tournament of
Champions PreSeason Classic in September in Baltimore.

The other surprisingly strong performance came from New Hampshire.
Winning their region for the first time ever this year, UNH earned a spot in the Tournament and made the best of it, scoring 20 points and taking home
their first ever Tournament of Champions team ribbon, a 7th
Place.   Rounding out the top teams was University of Mary Washington,
who followed up their Champion performance at the Tournament of Champions Preseason Classic in September with an 8th Place performance at the
Winter Classic.

Virginia Intermont Coach Eddie Federwisch’s New Year’s resolution was to turn up the heat on his team in 2011, and it paid dividends in the first month of
this new year.  Intermont will take the Series Champion trophy home to Bristol for a record eighth time.  The Series Championship is awarded to the
highest point total of the Holiday Tournament and one other show.  Skidmore scored enough in just the Holiday Tournament to finish in the Top Ten even
though they missed the other two shows.  Mary Washington scored 53 points in two shows, but missed the required Holiday Tournament.

The newest feature of the Tournament of Champions was the Equestrian Talent Search Medal class, for which top high school riders were invited to
participate based on their performances in the Equestrian Talent Search series of clinics held at six locations around the country earlier in the year.
Virginia Intermont College was the sponsor of the event, offering a $5000 scholarship to the winner.  Twenty-two riders began the class with equitation on
the flat performances, after which the judge chose twelve to return for a jumping phase.  Following the fences rounds, four riders were invited back for
further testing, the same format as the collegiate medal.  In the end, the winner of the ETS Medal and the VIC scholarship was Ashley Wells, a senior from
Erie, Pennsylvania, who trains with Lew Trumble, the coach of the Edinboro College IHSA team.  Ashley now has a choice to make, as she had previously
committed to riding at Lynchburg next year.  In Reserve Champion was Kayla Akers, a senior from Cincinnati, Ohio.  Kayla trains with Jim Arrigon at
Beckett Run, and was part of the 2009 IEA National Champion team.  She hopes to ride next year at either Virginia Intermont or St Andrews.

The judge for the event was Sarah Good of Kansas City.  Sarah has judged the Tournament a couple times previously, and judged the IHSA Nationals a few
years ago.  The show host was Chatham Hall, a girls boarding school in western Virginia.  Chatham Hall and Equestrian Director Cricket Stone provided a
wonderfully festive facility and about half the horses used in the show.  The remainder of the horses came from nearby Virginia Intermont, Sweet Briar,
Virginia Tech, and Randolph College.
Teams enjoyed a sunny day with temperatures nearing 60 degrees, a welcome break for the many teams that had traveled from the Northeast and
Midwest.

Next Year’s Tournament of Champions Series will begin at Otterbein University in Columbus Ohio next September, followed by the 20th Anniversary
Holiday Tournament at Centenary College in Hackettstown, New Jersey in December.

The next Equestrian Talent Search clinic will return to Chatham Hall in March, followed by Randolph College in July.

Equestrians Win Tournament Series to Clinch 15th National Championship January 31, 2011 Virginia Intermont College equestrians hit a milestone,
earning the college its 15th national riding championship by winning the Winter Classic Tournament of Champions Saturday, Jan. 29, to clinch the
prestigious national Tournament of Champions Series championship.
With the consistency of five second place finishes and a first place ribbon, VI’s Intercollegiate Horse Show Association teams won the Winter Classic
held at Chatham Hall School, besting the top 20 colleges invited to the tourney, including Virginia Tech, Penn State University and Dartmouth College.
VI’s teams earned a total of 36 points to combine with their previous scorings at the “Pre-Season” and “Holiday” tournaments to clinch the Tournament
of Champion Series Championship. That stacked up Virginia Intermont’s eighth win of the tournament series, a record in the 19-year history of the
competition.
Eddie Federwisch, director of equine studies, and coach of the IHSA teams along with Sue Glover, termed it “very exciting” to bring home a 15th national
