Founded in 1835, students are given a foundation in the broad disciplines of the liberal arts (sciences, humanities, social sciences, and the fine arts) and encouraged to utilize a series of pre-professional institutes in order to focus on their future career. Pre-health professions (including pre-vet), business, law and public policy, education, engineering, and the environment are highlights of this structure. Beginning in the fall of 2009, Albion will also offer international equestrian certification through the British Horse Society, allowing students to supplement their bachelor's degree with practical, hands-on experience and knowledge in the equine industry.
Riding description: The Nancy G. Held Equestrian Center, constructed in 2004, spans 340 acres at the south end of Albion's main campus and offers student horse boarding with daily turnout. It also boasts an indoor arena measuring 100' x 400'. School horses are available. The Held Center is home to Albion's dressage team (ranked in the Top 10 nationally), hunt seat team, and hosts meets for its western team. Additionally, a winter indoor show jumping series and other competitions allow students to compete at relatively low cost while completing their education; students who wish to are also encouraged to show at other rated competitions throughout the region (including USDF, USEA, and USHJA shows). Periodic clinics with internationally known riders are also held. Additional school info: Albion has a young equestrian program that is just beginning to gain national recognition. Students who enroll now become a part of what is expected to be a long and storied tradition.
